The Right Clothing

Wearing the right running clothes allows you to run comfortably and enjoyably all year round. Running clothes help keep your body dry and at the right temperature by wicking away sweat. Additionally, they offer protection from rain and wind. The most important aspect of running clothes is that they are functional and allow you to move freely.

Your Upper Body

To keep your upper body warm, you can follow the 3-layer system. The first layer functions to keep your body dry and warm, or cool if needed. A thermal shirt is ideal for this layer. Thermal shirts come in long, short sleeves, or sleeveless versions. The second layer provides insulation and helps transport sweat from the first layer outward. A running shirt works well as the second layer and is available in long or short sleeves. The third layer consists of a running jacket that protects you from rain and wind. Running jackets are made of materials that are windproof, water-repellent, and breathable.

Your Lower Body

For your lower body, there are special running pants. You can choose between long, short, or three-quarter-length running pants. You can opt for tight-fitting pants, known as running tights or sport leggings, or looser running pants. A benefit of running tights is the freedom of movement they offer due to their snug fit. When wearing looser pants, make sure they are made from lightweight and breathable fabric.

If the temperatures are higher, you might prefer to wear running shorts. It’s important to keep your knees warm, as cold knees can lead to leg injuries. We recommend wearing running shorts only when the temperature is above 10°C. You can also opt to wear thermal pants under your running pants for added warmth.

Your Feet

Good socks are an essential part of your running outfit. Wearing the right socks reduces the risk of injury. Running socks provide support and wick away sweat. Many running socks are seamless, which helps prevent irritation. Ensure that you wear the correct size socks. Socks that are too large can slide, increasing the risk of blisters, while socks that are too small can pinch your feet and affect your comfort.

Thermal Clothing

Thermal clothing helps regulate your body temperature by wicking away sweat and creating an insulating layer of air if needed. It works in both summer and winter, keeping you cool in warm weather and warm in cold conditions. Thermal clothing is worn over sports underwear. Summer thermal clothing fits snugly against your body, while winter thermal clothing is worn slightly looser. There are thermal shirts and thermal pants available.

Compression Clothing

Thermal clothing and compression clothing are often confused, but they serve different purposes. Thermal clothing regulates body temperature, while compression clothing provides support. Compression clothing applies pressure to your muscles, reducing muscle vibration and energy loss. This allows you to exercise longer and experience less muscle fatigue. Additionally, compression clothing improves posture, enhancing breathing and speeding up muscle recovery. Compression clothing comes in shirts, pants, and socks/stockings.

Sports Underwear

Sports underwear is very important. It is breathable, moisture-wicking, and comfortable. Women’s sports underwear includes a sports bra and boxer shorts. Running can put a lot of strain on your breasts, but a supportive sports bra reduces the risk of strain and sagging. Click here for more information on the important features of a sports bra.

Tips

Your outfit isn’t complete without the right running shoes. Wearing good running shoes reduces the risk of injury.
Make sure you’re visible in the dark by adding reflective accessories to your outfit.
