Hockey protection
Why wear a hockey mouthguard?
Since August 1, 2015, mouthguards have been mandatory during hockey matches organized by the association. We also recommend wearing dental protection during less official matches or training sessions. There are a few conditions a hockey mouthguard must meet. The protector:
- must fit securely in the mouth
- must be easy to insert and remove
- must not interfere with breathing or speaking
- must not cause gagging
- must be tasteless and odorless
- must be easy to clean
- must be sturdy enough to provide protection
The hockey mouthguard is available in sizes for adults and juniors. We recommend choosing the junior size if the person is 10 years old or younger. If the person is 11 years old or older, choose the senior size.
Don't forget your hockey shin guards!
Wearing shin guards is mandatory. Hockey shin guards cover the shins and the tops of the ankles. When playing hockey, there is a risk of the hockey ball or the opponent's stick hitting your shin, which can lead to unpleasant injuries. Shin guards prevent bruises and even fractures. Most hockey shin guards are made of lightweight plastic and are held in place by Velcro straps.
Put on your gloves while playing hockey
Hockey gloves provide protection when the hockey stick is low to the ground, and there is a risk of scraping your hand on the ground or having a ball hit your hand. Hockey gloves should be sturdy and comfortable. There are hockey gloves that cover the entire hand and gloves that cover the hand and fingers but leave the thumb free, allowing for more freedom of movement. Did you know that in indoor hockey, you are required to wear closed hockey gloves?
Hockey mask during hockey
Hockey masks are designed to protect the face of the line stopper during penalty corners. The hockey masks do not provide full protection for the head and therefore cannot be worn by goalkeepers. Most hockey masks have adjustable Velcro straps for a good fit. This ensures the mask stays securely in place and can be quickly put on or taken off.
