Hockey shoes
Indoor Hockey Shoes vs. Field Hockey Shoes
The most commonly played form of hockey is field hockey, which is played outdoors on an artificial turf field. The shoes required for this type differ from those needed for indoor hockey. Field hockey shoes must provide good grip, absorb impact, and allow for agility. Indoor hockey shoes, on the other hand, should offer enough ankle mobility while ensuring the heel does not slip.
Which Hockey Shoes Are Right for Me?
To perform well in hockey, wearing the right shoes is essential. They must provide a good grip on the field while allowing quick movements. To reduce joint stress and absorb impacts, the shoes should have cushioning and provide sufficient foot support. Additionally, hockey shoes must be durable. In hockey, shoes not only endure constant running and sudden stops but also occasional impacts from sticks or balls.
The sole of the shoe is designed to provide enough grip. The type of sole needed for field hockey differs from that of indoor hockey. For indoor hockey, a flat sole with a herringbone pattern is ideal. Standard indoor hockey shoes are often used for this purpose. For field hockey, a sole with many small studs is necessary. The studs should not be as long as those on football shoes, as they could get stuck in the field, reducing agility and increasing the risk of injuries. Brands like Brabo and Asics offer a wide range of shoes that meet these important requirements.
How Long Do Hockey Shoes Last?
The lifespan of your hockey shoes depends on how often you play. On average, they should be replaced after a maximum of two seasons if you play twice a week. Always clean your shoes after use. Remove the insole after each training session or match and let the shoes air out, preferably outdoors. If your shoes get wet, let them dry in fresh air—never near a heater!
Tip
Your shoes should not be too tight but also not too large. Check the size chart to find the correct shoe size for your foot length. Be aware that sizes may vary by brand.
