Women's running jackets
Why Wear a Running Jacket?
When it’s cold, windy, or rainy, a running jacket provides essential protection. It’s important that the jacket is made of breathable material and efficiently wicks away sweat. A running jacket is particularly useful during winter and autumn but can also be comfortable on a cool summer evening.
The Material
Do you dress according to the 3-layer system? The running jacket serves as the third layer. Underneath, you wear a running shirt, and as the base layer, a thermal shirt. It’s important that all layers are moisture-wicking. If even one layer fails to perform this function, the effectiveness of the entire system is compromised.
Most running jackets are made of polyester. Polyester is lightweight, dries quickly, and has excellent moisture-wicking properties. Many running jackets are water-repellent and windproof. Water-repellent means they can withstand light rain. A drawstring with a stopper in the hem prevents wind from entering underneath the jacket.
Fit and Comfort
The running jacket should fit comfortably over your base layers. It should not restrict your movement. Ensure that the jacket isn’t too loose, as this can also hinder performance. Many running jackets include elastic panels to ensure a snug fit without compromising your range of motion.
Technologies
Some brands incorporate specialized technologies that enhance the jacket’s functionality. For example:
- Pearl Izumi uses Elite Barrier technology, making the running jacket windproof and water-resistant. Additionally, their Direct Vent technology, combined with ventilation openings on the back, helps wick sweat away quickly.
- Asics incorporates MotionDry technology to efficiently wick sweat, keeping you feeling dry and cool.
Washing Instructions
Check the washing instructions on the label inside the running jacket and follow them carefully to preserve its functionality. Wash your jacket soon after running to prevent sweat from settling into the fabric. Turn the jacket inside out before placing it in the washing machine. Avoid using fabric softener, as it can damage the technical fibers. Air-dry the jacket; it dries quickly. Using a dryer can cause the jacket to lose its shape.
Tips
- Ensure you’re visible in the dark. Most running jackets include reflective elements, but you can enhance visibility further with additional reflective accessories.
- If you’re wearing your jacket but find it too warm, zip it halfway up and tie the sleeves around your waist. This keeps the jacket secure and out of the way.
