When do you wear thermal trousers while hiking?

After your underwear, you wear thermal trousers as the first layer on your skin. While hiking it's important that you stay dry and warm, even when you stand still for a moment. Thermal trousers, together with a matching thermal shirt, keep you feeling dry and prevent you from getting cold. Wear thermal trousers in colder, rainier weather; your legs then stay warm and dry for longer!

What features does a pair of thermal trousers have?

Thermal trousers should fit snugly around your legs. This creates a layer of air between the thermal trousers and your skin. This layer keeps your body at the right temperature. If the trousers fit a bit looser, the layer is thicker and warmth is retained even better. The main focus of thermal trousers is providing warmth. Wicking away perspiration is somewhat less important, since the lower body generally sweats less than the upper body.

What material should my thermal trousers be made of?

Thermal trousers are often made from polyester. Merino wool is a good alternative. Both materials are lightweight and dry quickly. They also have the important property of wicking away moisture quickly. Merino wool is a type of wool that doesn't itch and stays fresh-smelling. There are also various styles of thermal trousers, such as long and short versions. You can wear thermal trousers under your hiking trousers all year round. In the colder months, thermal trousers provide warmth, and in the summer months the trousers offer cooling instead. Since the trousers fit snugly, you still have full freedom of movement.

Tip

Wash your thermal trousers according to the washing instructions, to preserve their important properties and get the most enjoyment out of them for as long as possible.
