Outdoor Softshells
Why wear a softshell jacket while hiking?
A softshell is designed for warmth and comfort, which is nice during hiking. If it starts raining during your hike and you're wearing a softshell jacket, you don't have to worry about getting soaked. The jacket also has the breathable ability of a fleece, preventing it from getting too warm quickly. Additionally, the softshell jacket offers a lot of freedom of movement. A softshell is ideal for all seasons; on warmer days, you can unzip the softshell to catch enough wind to avoid getting extremely hot. Of course, the softshell is also suitable to wear as a jacket to work or school.
Is a softshell jacket waterproof?
A softshell jacket is not waterproof, but water-repellent. If you unfortunately have to brave a rain shower while hiking, the softshell ensures that most raindrops slide off the jacket, a process called beading. It also quickly wicks away perspiration. In addition to being water-repellent, the jacket is also windproof, preventing body cooling when it's windy. The softshell can be zipped up high on the neck to keep the cold and wind out. Many softshell jackets come with a hood, which is sometimes detachable. Since a lot of heat is lost through the head, a hooded jacket is definitely recommended in cold conditions. Most softshells have drawstrings at the bottom of the jacket to adjust it to your body and ensure a good fit. At the end of the sleeves, there is often Velcro. This allows you to tighten the sleeves around the wrists, preventing rain and wind from coming in along the arms.
Tip
By washing the softshell occasionally, you keep it clean and maintain its breathable function. Check the label carefully for washing instructions to keep all functions optimal.
