Why wear a softshell jacket while hiking?

A softshell jacket is made for warmth and comfort, which is pleasant while hiking. Should it start raining during your hike and you're wearing a softshell jacket, you needn't worry about getting soaked. The jacket also has the breathability of a fleece, meaning it doesn't get too warm quickly. The softshell also offers plenty of freedom of movement. A softshell is ideal all year round; on warmer days you can unzip it, letting in enough air so you don't get extremely warm. Of course the softshell is also suitable to wear, for example, to work or school.

Is a softshell jacket waterproof?

A softshell jacket isn't waterproof, but water-repellent. Unfortunately have to brave a rain shower while hiking? The softshell makes most raindrops slide off the jacket, known as beading. Perspiration is also wicked away quickly. Besides being water-repellent, the jacket is also windproof. This prevents the body from cooling down when it's very windy. The softshell can be zipped up high to the neck, so you can keep cold and wind off your neck too. Many softshell jackets are fitted with a hood, in some cases even removable. Since a lot of heat is lost through the head, a jacket with a hood is especially recommended in cold weather. Most softshell jackets are fitted with drawcords at the bottom of the jacket. These let you adjust the jacket to your body and ensure it fits snugly. The ends of the sleeves often have velcro. This lets you close the sleeves tightly around the wrist, preventing rain and wind from getting in through the sleeves.

By washing the softshell jacket occasionally, you keep it clean and preserve its breathable function. Check the label carefully for washing instructions, to also keep the other functions in optimal condition.
