What makes good rain gear?

If you're going on a hike and want to be prepared for anything, we recommend bringing a set of rain gear. It weighs almost nothing, and if you get caught in a rain shower, it keeps you dry. Rain gear is there to protect you from rain and wind. The waterproofness of rain gear is measured in a water column; what the different values mean, you can read in the overview below.

  • From 0 mm: the rain gear is water-repellent, but not waterproof.
  • From 1,000 mm: the rain gear keeps out water, but isn't pressure-resistant. If you sit down on a wet chair, for example, the rain gear will eventually leak.
  • From 2,000 mm: the rain gear stays waterproof even during longer rain showers, but will still leak under pressure.
  • From 5,000 mm: the rain gear withstands long and intense weather; even under high pressure the garment stays waterproof. Under very prolonged high pressure the product may eventually leak.
  • From 15,000 mm: the rain gear withstands extremely heavy rain showers, and even underwater the garment keeps you dry.

Make sure the rain gear you bring is breathable and ventilates well. This firstly helps prevent you from getting too warm too quickly, and if that does happen anyway, perspiration is released into the outside air. In short, the waterproof layer should let moisture through from the inside out, but not the other way round.

Different types of rain gear

You obviously hope it won't happen, but there's always a chance of rain during a hike. While hiking, always make sure you can adapt your clothing to the weather, such as rain gear in case of a poor forecast. Rain gear can consist of a rain suit, a rain jacket and/or rain trousers. A rain suit consists of a rain jacket and rain trousers. These are also available separately, for both women and men, letting you put together your own rain suit. Don't want wet feet either? Then also take a look at the range of rain boots, killing two birds with one stone.

Tip

To enjoy your rain gear for as long as possible, it's wise to let it dry thoroughly after use before putting it away.
