Rain suits for hiking
Ever been caught out in a downpour and got soaked? The weather is unpredictable, but that doesn't mean you can't hike when rain is forecast. Head out well prepared and bring a rain suit!
What makes up a good rain suit?

- From 0 mm: the rain suit is water-repellent, but not waterproof.
- From 1,000 mm: the rain suit keeps out water, but isn't pressure-resistant. If you sit down on a wet chair, for example, the rain trousers will eventually leak.
- From 2,000 mm: the rain suit stays waterproof even during longer rain showers, but will still leak under pressure.
- From 5,000 mm: the rain suit withstands long and intense weather; even under high pressure the trousers stay waterproof. Under very prolonged high pressure the product may eventually leak.
- From 15,000 mm: the rain suit withstands extremely heavy rain showers, and even underwater the suit keeps you dry.

What are the features of a good rain suit?
So it's important that the rain suit is made from waterproof material that also has ventilating properties. Some rain suits are fitted with a shoe cover, so feet stay dry too. It's also nice if the suit is fitted with a hood. In that case check whether it's foldable, so it doesn't obstruct your view when, for example, it's very windy. Check whether sleeves, trouser legs and jacket pockets can be closed with, for example, velcro, a drawcord or a zip. Finally, check whether the rain trousers are fitted with zips or velcro at the bottom, so they're easy to put on and take off.
How do I wash my rain suit?
Wear and tear can reduce the waterproofness of a rain suit. Even after just one wash, the waterproof properties can diminish significantly. So it's better to choose not to put the suit in the washing machine, but to wipe it down with a sponge and warm water. Read the wash label on the inside of the rain suit to be safe. If the suit can be washed, don't use fabric softener. Dry the suit on a drying rack, avoiding sun and heating while doing so.
Tip
You generally wear a rain suit in dull weather or during the darker months. Most rain suits are fitted with reflective elements. You could optionally complete your outfit with other reflective items.
