Surface

In competitive football there are two types: indoor football and outdoor football. With outdoor football you can play on artificial turf, natural grass or the street, and special balls have been designed for each of these surfaces. Artificial turf and street football, for example, call for a hard wearing ball, while this is much less of an issue on natural grass.

Indoor football is played by adults with a so called low bounce ball. What's special about these balls is that they bounce less than outdoor balls, which means indoor football relies a bit more on technique. An official indoor ball is size 4 and weighs between 400 and 440 grams.

There are also special balls for playing beach soccer. These balls have a soft outer layer and are water resistant, making them perfectly suited for use in and around water!

Training ball or match ball?

A distinction is made between training balls and match balls, and this mainly comes down to the material. Match balls are always made of polyurethane, a hard wearing and durable material. A polyurethane ball keeps performing well in all weather conditions. A ball made of PVC reacts more to cold and rain and is therefore not suitable as a match ball. These balls can still be used for training, though.

Size and weight

Men's teams always play with a size 5 ball, which has a circumference of about 70cm and weighs between 370 and 450 grams.

Tip

Read the product description carefully, as it lists all the specifications of the ball, such as which surface it's suitable for, what material it's made from, what it weighs, and more.
