What happens without slippers?

Shower rooms contain a lot of fungi, which isn't necessarily harmful to your feet. Healthy skin has a dry, hard outer layer that protects against these fungi. During a match or training you produce sweat, including on your feet. This makes the skin softer, reducing the protective function of the skin's outer layer. This means the fungi present in the shower room can actually penetrate the skin. These fungi are very small and grow in the skin, mostly between the toes, causing blisters, peeling skin or cracks there. This leads to itching or even pain. To prevent this, we recommend wearing slippers while showering.

It can also happen that fungi grow in and around the toenails. When this happens, the nail becomes thick, yellow and brittle. This is easy to prevent by wearing slippers. Slippers also provide more grip, reducing the chance of slipping.

Is it dangerous?

No, fungi aren't really dangerous for most people, although itching and pain are annoying. Feet also look a lot less nice and fresh. In some people, however, fungi can cause harm, for example people with diabetes. This condition means the body copes less well with fungi. In these people, fungi can penetrate deeper into the skin and cause infections.

Tips

Fungi also develop if you put on your shoes with damp feet. So make sure you dry your feet well after showering, especially between the toes.
