Goalkeeper shirts
A goalkeeper shirt sets you apart from the outfield players. Check out shirts from Nike and Jako.
Why goalkeeper shirts?
As a goalkeeper, you'll do everything you can to stop the ball from going into the net. That often puts you in situations where you have to dive or throw yourself in front of the ball. Goalkeeper shirts feature padding, which offers protection in these situations. The padding prevents grazes and bruises. This matters especially on artificial turf pitches. Artificial turf is quite abrasive, which increases the risk of grazes.
Offering protection during dives isn't the only function of a goalkeeper shirt. As a goalkeeper, you're standing still for a large part of the match. Still, you need to keep your body warm so you can react alertly and flexibly when the ball suddenly comes your way. Goalkeeper shirts are specially designed to partly block the wind. On top of that, a goalkeeper shirt is made from breathable material and carries away sweat, so you stay dry and comfortable.
Technologies & materials
Different brands have developed their own technology to carry away sweat quickly, keeping clothing dry and comfortable. Adidas has its ClimaLite technology, Nike its Dri-Fit technology and Uhlsport its Smartbreath Classic technology. These technologies were developed independently of each other, but offer the same benefits.
Goalkeeper shirts are made from polyester. The advantage of polyester is that this material is light and strong. It's also breathable, which makes this fabric very suitable for sportswear.
Tips
Wash the shirt within a day of wearing it. This prevents sweat from getting the chance to soak into the shirt. Wait longer and you won't get the unpleasant smell out of the shirt anymore.
