Hockey protection

Hockey protection from Brabo, The Indian Maharadja and OPRO keeps you safe on the pitch or in the hall, from mouthguards and shinguards to gloves and facemasks. A mouthguard has been mandatory during KNHB matches since 2015, and shinguards are also a fixed part of the kit. Pay attention to the right size for each product, as senior and junior sizes differ quite a bit.

Why wear a hockey mouthguard?

Since 1 August 2015, mouthguards have been mandatory during matches organised by the federation. We also recommend wearing dental protection during less official matches or training. There are a number of conditions that a hockey mouthguard must meet. The guard:

  • must sit firmly in the mouth
  • must be easy to insert and remove
  • must not interfere with breathing or talking
  • must not cause a gag reflex
  • must be tasteless and odourless
  • must be easy to clean
  • must be sturdy enough to provide protection

The hockey mouthguard is available in an adult size and a junior size. We recommend choosing the junior size if it's intended for someone aged 10 or younger. If the person who will wear the guard is 11 or older, choose the senior size instead.

Don't forget your hockey shinguards!

Wearing shinguards is mandatory. Hockey shinguards cover the shins and the top of the ankles. When playing hockey you run the risk of the ball or the opponent's stick hitting your shin, causing unpleasant injuries. Shinguards prevent bruises and sometimes even fractures. Most hockey shinguards are made of lightweight plastic and held in place with velcro.

Put on your gloves while playing hockey

Hockey gloves provide protection when the stick is low to the ground and there's a chance your hand scrapes the ground or gets hit by a ball. Hockey gloves must be sturdy and comfortable. There are hockey gloves that cover the whole hand and gloves that cover the hand and fingers but leave the thumb free, giving more freedom of movement. Did you know that indoors you're required to wear closed hockey gloves?

Hockey mask while playing hockey

The hockey masks are meant to protect the face of the post defender during penalty corners. Hockey masks don't offer full head protection and therefore may not be worn by goalkeepers. Most hockey masks have adjustable velcro straps for a good fit. This keeps the hockey mask securely in place and lets you put it on and take it off quickly.
