Is wearing a hockey mouthguard mandatory?

Unfortunately, accidents with a hockey ball or hockey stick still happen occasionally on the pitch, so it's very important to protect your teeth well! A mouthguard makes sure the teeth are well shielded, minimising the risk of (irreparable) damage. Wearing a hockey mouthguard indoors and on the pitch has been mandatory since the 2015/2016 season.

What makes a good hockey mouthguard?

The most important thing is that the hockey mouthguard fits your teeth well and stays in place well during sport. Hockey mouthguards are available in various types: the standard mouthguard, the Boil & Bite mouthguard and the custom-made mouthguard. The standard mouthguard is the most affordable option, you just need to insert it and clean it after use. The Boil & Bite mouthguards are a bit more expensive and you boil them before use, after 10 seconds you insert the mouthguard and you'll notice it shapes itself to your teeth and mouth. A custom-made mouthguard is the most comfortable but also costs the most. Hockey mouthguards are also available in junior and senior sizes. Generally, children up to 12 years wear a junior mouthguard and then switch to a senior mouthguard.

If you wear braces as a youngster, that's been thought of too! Some hockey mouthguards are made so they can also be worn with braces without causing discomfort.

How do I clean my hockey mouthguard?

There are lots of bacteria in your mouth, and by wearing the hockey mouthguard those bacteria possibly end up in your mouthguard too. So always clean your hockey mouthguard well after use! This keeps the hockey mouthguard hygienic for longer and means you'll need to buy a new one less often. Clean your hockey mouthguard before and after use with cold water, a bit of soap and a toothbrush. Then rinse your mouthguard well and store it in its storage box.
