Outdoor football

You can play outdoor football on natural grass or artificial turf, but there's no difference in the ball itself. So the ball you use on natural grass can also be used for a game on artificial turf! Outdoor footballs are often made from PVC or polyurethane. A PVC ball wears out faster than a polyurethane ball and is therefore usually cheaper. Polyurethane is a hard-wearing, durable material, so balls made from it hold up well in all weather conditions.

It's really important for kids that a ball has the right weight and size, since playing with a ball that's too heavy can put unnecessary strain on the muscles and joints of boys and girls! Generally, size 5 is used, but the weight of the ball varies:

  • - Youth up to 10 years: 290 grams (size 4)
  • - Youth 10 – 15 years: 320 – 370 grams
  • - Youth 15 – 18 years: 370 – 450 grams

Indoor football

Indoor football is played with a so called low-bounce ball. These balls bounce less than outdoor footballs, forcing you to play more technically. An indoor football is always size 4 and weighs between 400 and 440 grams. Indoor footballs are mostly made from polyurethane, since this is a very hard-wearing, lightweight material.

Match balls and training balls

A distinction is also made between match balls and training balls, and the difference lies mainly in the material. As you now know, polyurethane is a very hard-wearing material, so it's always used for match balls. Balls made from PVC are usually only used for training.

Tips

There are also special balls for playing football on the beach! These balls have a soft outer layer, making them very suitable for kicking around barefoot. They're also water-resistant, of course.

The product description of each ball tells you exactly which surface it's suitable for, as well as its size, weight and more.
