Function of the goalkeeper shirt
As a goalkeeper it can sometimes happen that you make a slide along the ground to stop the ball. A goalkeeper shirt is fitted with protective padding at the elbows, so the chance of grazes or bruises is reduced. Especially on artificial turf pitches this protection comes in handy. Artificial turf is rougher than regular grass, which increases the chance of grazes.
Besides protection against grazes and bruises, a goalkeeper shirt also keeps your body at the right temperature. As a goalkeeper you're sometimes very active and at other times you're standing still. In all circumstances your body needs to stay at the right temperature to prevent injuries. Goalkeeper shirts are therefore made of material that partly blocks wind and is able to carry away sweat. This keeps your body feeling dry and comfortable.
Technology and material
A number of brands add the moisture wicking property using a special technique. The brand Adidas, for example, uses ClimaLite technology.
Goalkeeper shirts are often made of a synthetic fabric, such as polyester. Polyester is lightweight, strong, holds its shape and can carry away moisture quickly.
Tip
To enjoy your goalkeeper shirt for as long as possible, it's important to wash it according to the washing instructions. Try to wash your shirt soon after playing sports, so sweat doesn't get much chance to soak in.
