When to wear training pants?
Training pants are usually worn before and after playing football. If it's too cold for shorts, you can also keep the training pants on during a football training session. It's important that your muscles are and stay warm, warm muscles are less prone to injury. It's therefore wise to keep the training pants on during the warm-up. Put the training pants back on after your training or match, so your muscles don't cool down too quickly. Letting your muscles cool down gradually reduces muscle soreness.
Preventing injuries
Your muscles need to be warm to reduce the risk of muscle tears. Wearing training pants helps your muscles warm up faster and stay at temperature. A good warm-up is also important for warming up and loosening your muscles. Do a cool-down after playing football. Put the training pants back on then too, so your muscles cool down gradually.
Is it 10 degrees Celsius or colder outside? Then wear training pants during football training too. If you don't wear long pants, blood circulation decreases due to the cold. Your muscles then receive fewer nutrients and waste products aren't removed properly. This causes acidification to occur faster and you need longer to recover.
The material
The material of training pants must be able to wick away sweat. A synthetic fabric has this property and therefore keeps your body feeling dry and comfortable. A combination of a synthetic fabric and cotton is also an option, but we don't recommend training pants made entirely of cotton. Cotton absorbs moisture and doesn't carry it away. Cotton gets wet and heavy from sweat and you get cold. Cold isn't good for your muscles.
There are two types of training pants to distinguish, polyester training pants and woven training pants. Both types are made of polyester, only the woven training pants are made using a different technique. Woven means that the material is woven. The yarns are woven tightly together, creating a smooth, supple fabric.
A number of brands add the moisture-wicking property through their own technology. Nike does this through Nike Dri-Fit technology and Adidas has its own Adidas ClimaLite technology.
You need to be able to move optimally in the training pants. Sizing varies per brand. Choose the right size by checking it in the corresponding size chart.
Most training pants have an elastic waistband, sometimes with a drawstring. This makes the pants fit snugly around your body. The training pants also often have short zips at the bottom of the legs. This makes it easy to put the pants on and take them off over your shoes.
Tips
Follow the washing instructions, found on the label on the inside of the training pants. Do not use fabric softener, as this can damage the technical fabrics, causing important properties of the pants to be lost. Don't put the pants in the dryer, but hang them up to dry.
Combine your training pants with a track jacket and head onto the football pitch well prepared.
