Which football boot is suitable for artificial turf?

Many players wear boots developed for playing on natural grass pitches on artificial turf pitches. These boots don't have the properties that a good turf shoe has, so this is not recommended. Turf shoes have somewhat shorter studs to provide optimal grip, while still offering the flexibility needed during football. You can recognise a turf shoe by AG, which stands for Artificial Ground. The main difference is the studs underneath the shoes. The studs of football boots for grass pitches not only wear out faster, but also cause more injuries because players slip or get their feet stuck. Football boots for regular grass pitches have long studs. These provide a lot of grip, but a different kind of grip is needed on an artificial turf pitch.

Football boots for natural grass vs turf shoes

Artificial turf requires "less" grip, because you can't dig the studs into the pitch. This is the case with natural grass. Because the long studs dig deep into the pitch, your feet can get stuck when you want to turn or push off. Your upper body does turn, but if your foot stays put, this can cause injuries to the ankle, knee or hip. This can be prevented by using turf shoes. In addition, using grass boots on an artificial turf pitch is bad for the pitch. Because turf shoes use more and shorter studs, this provides enough grip and freedom of movement. These studs are made from a different material, so they wear out less quickly and therefore last longer. Did you know that besides the AG shoe, TF and FG shoes are also suitable for playing on artificial turf?

FAQ about football boots for artificial turf

  • What are the benefits of wearing special turf shoes when playing on artificial turf?
The studs on turf shoes are shorter than on other football boots, giving you much more grip while still being able to move flexibly across the pitch. Another benefit of turf studs is that they wear out less quickly than a football boot for (natural) grass.
  • Can I also use these boots on natural grass?
If you're looking for boots you can wear on both artificial turf and natural grass, the FG football boots are your best option. These are all-round, making them good for both surfaces.
  • Can I keep the same size as my football boots for natural grass?
We recommend choosing the same size as your football boots for natural grass. If you're switching brands, it's always advisable to check the size chart, so you're sure you have the right size.
