When should you drink?

To keep the body functioning properly, it's important to drink enough throughout the day. The body's fluid balance ensures that it can remove waste products (via sweat and urine) and maintain its temperature. By the time you feel thirsty, you're actually already too late. During intense exertion, the brain may fail to signal thirst, meaning you don't feel thirsty. This can be dangerous and lead to dehydration. Another good way to check whether you're drinking enough is to look at your urine. Is it dark in colour? Then you haven't been drinking enough.

Why drink?

While exercising, the body produces heat, and to prevent body temperature from rising too much, the body sweats. It's important to keep drinking enough so the body can keep sweating to prevent overheating. Metabolism also speeds up during exercise, releasing more waste products. These are removed via urine and sweat, and this also requires fluid. When your urine is dark, you can tell you haven't been drinking enough.

The bottles

Bottles are handy for taking water to training or a football match. Thanks to the spout on the bottle, you can drink without your mouth touching it, which prevents bacteria from getting into the water. This means several people can drink from a single bottle.

To make it easy to carry bottles around, there are bottle carriers - racks that can hold up to 12 large bottles.

Tip

To prevent mould in the bottles, it's important to rinse them out immediately after use, especially if they contained a sports drink. If the inside of the bottle starts to get grimy, you can break a dishwasher tablet in half and put it in the bottle with water. Let it soak for a few hours and the bottle will be as good as new.
