What is fleece?

Fleece is a warm, well-insulating fabric that resembles animal fur. It has the good properties of wool, even though it isn't wool. Fleece is a synthetic material that's much lighter than wool. For anyone allergic to wool or who, on principle, doesn't wear animal fur, this is the ideal substitute.

Is a fleece jacket waterproof?

Fleece is hydrophobic, meaning it doesn't absorb water. When a fleece sweater or fleece jacket is submerged in a bath, it only absorbs 1% of its own weight in water. Fleece therefore never becomes heavy and cold from a rain shower. Fleece is also a well-breathing fabric and therefore very suitable to wear on a hike in colder weather conditions. Is a fleece jacket warm?

While hiking you're bound to take a break now and then, and it's important then that the body is kept warm. Cooling down quickly during a break increases the risk of injury and causes extra muscle soreness. A fleece jacket is made from synthetically knitted fibres, often in the form of polyester, meaning it can't absorb moisture. You could compare it to wool, but many times lighter. This lets the fleece hold the layer of air around your body in place well, keeping you nice and warm! Fleece is easy to put on and take off and keeps the body nice and warm, letting you carry on hiking vigorously right after the break without the muscles needing to warm up again.

Tip

When washing, pay close attention to the washing instructions. Following these preserves the quality and functions of the fleece. Don't put the fleece in the tumble dryer. The fleece dries quickly again once you hang it up.
