Choose the right backpack

First, ask yourself what you're going to use the backpack for. Then you can work out what size you need. The volume of a backpack is expressed in litres: the more litres, the bigger the backpack. Most backpacks have adjustable shoulder straps with soft padding, which makes carrying the backpack more comfortable.

Types of backpacks

Backpacks come in different types and sizes. These bags are often used as school bags. They don't need to be extremely large, but should be sturdy enough to carry a few books. The back of school backpacks is reinforced, so the bag keeps its shape. Some school bags feature a laptop compartment.

Students also need a gym bag. These simple bags have a single compartment and are made from thin, lightweight material, suitable for storing just gym clothes and light shoes.

Finally there's the travel backpack, which lets you bring things along for a longer period. These bags are a lot bigger than standard backpacks. The many compartments and extra features mean the bag can be packed practically and still carries well even when heavily loaded. The adjustable chest strap, waist belt, hip belt and shoulder straps distribute the weight, making the bag comfortable to carry. The bags themselves generally weigh little and often come with a built-in rain cover.

Different compartments

Backpacks and travel backpacks feature various types of compartments. Every bag has a main compartment, the largest compartment where most items can be stored. Some of these main compartments have an extra section where you can store a laptop. Check the product descriptions of the bags to see whether the bag has a laptop compartment and, if so, what size laptop fits in it.

Many bags also have a front pocket: a small compartment on the front of the bag, where you can store accessories, for example. The newest bags feature a small pocket on top of the bag, closed with a zipper, where you can keep small accessories like keys and, say, a pack of gum.

The sides of backpacks are fitted with one or two mesh pockets: open pockets made from perforated material, handy for carrying bottles. On the front of many bags, from brands such as Dakine for example, you'll find elastic cords, useful for attaching something like a skateboard.

Material

Most backpacks are made from polyester. Polyester is a smooth, lightweight, durable fabric that feels soft. It holds its shape well, keeps its colour well and lasts a long time. Polyester also dries very quickly and is sturdy, so the bag can carry a lot of weight.
