Drinking while playing hockey

After oxygen, water is the most important element for the human body. Water is an important factor in your body's heat regulation. By sweating, the body removes waste products. Fluid deficiency causes the muscles to function less well, which can cause cramps. If fluid isn't replenished in time, you can dehydrate. Too little fluid reduces your performance capacity and harms your health. That's why it's so important to drink enough before, during and after a hockey training session or match to compensate for fluid loss.

Water versus sports drink

During intense and prolonged exertion, using isotonic sports drinks can be useful. Isotonic sports drinks promote fluid absorption, provide energy and can help replenish mineral losses. In all other cases, water is sufficient! Isotonic drinks are also flavoured.

Bottle

A bottle is handy to bring along when you go play hockey. Put it in your bag so you always have it with you. Most bottles used by hockey players have a screw cap with a pull-out drinking spout. The contents can vary per bottle. There are also special bottle carriers. These are ideal when multiple bottles need to be taken along, for example for a whole team.

Tip

Drinking small sips prevents sloshing in your stomach.
