Requirements for an Official Hockey Ball
An official hockey ball is hard and round and must meet the following requirements:
- The circumference of the ball must be between 22.4 and 23.5 cm
- The weight is between 156 and 163 grams
- The ball can be of different colors, except green due to the field
- White balls are required during matches
- The material is plastic. The ball has a smooth exterior, but seams or small dimples on the surface are allowed
- If it snows, the white ball is replaced by a colored one
If the hockey ball does not meet these requirements, it will not be approved for matches. However, the ball can still be used during training.
Different Types of Hockey Balls
There are hockey balls for playing on sand fields, so-called dimple balls for playing on water fields, and hockey balls suitable for street play. A dimple ball is a ball with small indentations on the surface. These balls are primarily used on water fields because they roll faster and bounce less than a regular hockey ball. A street hockey ball is a hard, lightweight PVC ball. These balls are ideal for children to play with on the street or in the garden.
