Why shin guards?

Since 1999 it has been mandatory to wear shin guards during football matches, and that's certainly not without reason! Football is a contact sport, so you can regularly come into contact with an opponent. This ranges from light touches during, for example, a corner, to hard collisions during a duel for the ball, and this last example can sometimes lead to serious injuries. The lower legs often take quite a beating too, but by wearing shin guards, the risk of a serious injury is significantly reduced!

Which size shin guards?

Shin guards that are too tight will restrict your freedom of movement, while shin guards that are too big won't stay in place properly and therefore won't offer the protection you need. So it's very important to wear the right size shin guard. Many shin guards have a hard, pre shaped shield, and you'll probably quickly feel whether the shin guard fits well or is too big or too small. As a guideline, a shin guard should cover at least three quarters of the shin and extend no more than five centimetres below the knee.

Tip

Don't leave your shin guards in your bag, hang them up! This way they can air out, which significantly reduces the risk of bacteria, so you can enjoy them for longer!

Do you prefer wearing shin guards without ankle socks? With guard stays, you can make sure the shin guards still stay in place properly!
