Which Running Shirt?

Do you want to run comfortably without being bothered by cold or dampness? A running shirt is made of material that effectively wicks away sweat. This way, you won’t get wet from perspiration, and your body will stay at the right temperature. There are various types of running shirts available.

The Seasons

To help you dress appropriately for the weather during your run, the 3-layer system is commonly used. The first layer can be a thermal shirt. This helps wick sweat away and keeps your body at the right temperature. The running shirt acts as the second layer, further moving the moisture to the third layer. As an outer layer, if it’s not too warm, you can wear a running jacket to protect your body from rain and wind. For summer, special thermal wear is available, and on warm days, you can skip the outer layer. On extremely cold days, you might want to add an extra middle layer.

What Material?

Not all materials are suitable for a running shirt. Polyester is commonly used because it is lightweight and wicks moisture away quickly. Additionally, polyester retains its shape. Some running shirts have mesh inserts on the sides for optimal ventilation. A number of running shirts come with reflective details, so you can remain visible in the dark. Some even offer UV protection. Look for details like a small zippered pocket, where you can store your key, for added convenience.

Running shirts are available with short and long sleeves. They often have a round neck, but there are also options with a high collar. These shirts generally feature a short zipper, so you can easily put the shirt on or take it off, and also open the zipper if you need some ventilation.

Technologies

Some brands use special technologies in their running shirts. Nike’s Dri-Fit technology helps wick moisture away from your body, so you stay dry and comfortable while running. Mizuno’s DryLite technology also works to wick moisture away. Superdry uses Super SoftTouch material, making their running shirts exceptionally soft to the touch.

Washing Instructions

Try to wash your running shirt as soon as possible after running. This prevents sweat from soaking into the shirt. Avoid using fabric softener and don’t put the shirt in the dryer. Always check the washing instructions on the label inside the shirt.

Tip

In the summer, choose a lighter-colored shirt. Dark shirts absorb sunlight, making you feel extra warm.
