High outdoor shoes versus low outdoor shoes

High hiking shoes support the ankles, so you stand stably in the shoes. The high hiking shoe is extremely suitable for mountainous areas, partly because your feet won't slide forward completely when descending. Low hiking shoes are airier and give you more freedom of movement. Both low and high hiking shoes from Teva or Lowa are very sturdy, so your feet are well protected against blisters and other trouble.

Fitting shoes

At the end of the day your feet are bigger than in the morning. That's why we recommend trying on shoes in the late afternoon or evening. Put on your hiking socks to get the fitting moment as close as possible to the real moment of wear. While trying them on, also feel whether you notice any pressure points, for example on your little toe or heel.

Hiking shoe categories

Hiking shoes are divided into certain categories, from light to heavy:

  • Category A: flexible sole, suitable for travel and daily walks on flat paths.
  • Category A/B: sturdy sole, suitable for flat paths and hilly landscape.
  • Category B: sturdy all-round shoes with plenty of tread, suitable for tougher walks on uneven terrain.
  • Category C: robust, high hiking shoes, suitable for heavy trekking with a lot of gear.

Maintenance

Clean your shoes regularly with a bit of lukewarm water, then treat them with a wax, cream or spray. Have the shoes gotten wet from rain? Let them dry by stuffing them with newspaper, which absorbs the moisture.
