Preventing athlete's foot
Fungi are often found in shower rooms. These fungi can cause unpleasant itching and even pain in your feet. In principle, your feet are protected against these fungi by the dry, hard outer layer of the skin. However, when your feet get wet from, for example, sweat or the warm water of the shower, your skin softens and the protective function of the outer layer decreases. The risk of athlete's foot becomes greater in this case. Don't give the fungus a chance and wear slippers when you shower!
Another big advantage of wearing slippers while showering is that you're less likely to slip. A wet floor is slippery, slippers give you grip.
Can athlete's foot be harmful?
Fungi are mainly annoying. They cause itching and pain, and besides that your feet look less nice and fresh. For people with diabetes, a fungal infection can actually be harmful. Because of diabetes, the body is less able to fight fungi. The fungi can penetrate deeper into the skin and cause infections as a result.
Types of slippers
There are different types of slippers, and the difference mainly lies in the type of strap. There are slippers with a wide strap, under which you slide your toes. Other slippers are flip-flops, slippers with a small 'post' between the big toe and second toe. The soles of slippers provide grip.
Tip
Fungi can also develop if you put damp feet into your shoes. So dry your feet well, especially between your toes. Don't buy slippers that are too big or too small. You'll then unconsciously use certain muscles to still be able to walk properly. These muscles can become overloaded, which can lead to injuries.
