Preventing Foot Fungus
Mold is often found in shower areas and can cause annoying itching and even pain in your feet. Generally, your feet are protected from these fungi by the dry, hard outer layer of the skin. However, when your feet become wet due to sweat or the warm water of the shower, the skin becomes softer, reducing the protective function of this layer. This increases the risk of foot fungus. Don’t give the fungus a chance—wear slippers when you shower!
Another significant advantage of wearing slippers while showering is that you are less likely to slip. A wet floor is slippery, and slippers provide better grip.
Can Foot Fungus Be Harmful?
Fungi are mostly just annoying. They cause itching and pain, and make your feet look less attractive and fresh. For people with diabetes, however, fungi can be more harmful. Diabetes impairs the body's ability to resist fungi. The fungi can penetrate deeper into the skin and cause infections.
Types of Slippers
There are different types of slippers, primarily differing in the type of strap. Some slippers have a wide strap where you slide your toes underneath. Other slippers are flip-flops, with a small 'stick' between the big toe and the second toe. The soles of slippers provide grip.
Tip
Fungi can also develop if you put on shoes with damp feet. Therefore, dry your feet thoroughly, especially between your toes. Avoid buying slippers that are too large or too small, as this can cause you to use certain muscles unconsciously, leading to overuse and potential injuries.
