Size and weight

For children it is very important that they do not use a ball that is too heavy, but for women the ball has a fixed size. Adults always use a size 5 ball, and the weight is always around 450 grams.

Material

Footballs are often made from polyurethane or PVC. The main advantage of polyurethane is that it is a very durable and wear-resistant material, and the ball also remains easy to play with in all kinds of weather conditions. The match ball used in competitive games is therefore always made of polyurethane. A PVC ball wears out faster and is therefore more often used for training. The biggest difference between an outdoor ball and an indoor ball lies in the bounce, an outdoor ball has a stronger bounce, which increases the pace of the game.

Certification

FIFA Quality PRO, FIFA Quality and International Match Standard (IMS) are well known certifications in football. A ball is tested on, among other things, weight, circumference and the change in shape at different temperatures, and based on this it is determined whether or not the ball deserves the certification. You can recognise an approved ball by the stamp of the relevant certification on the ball, so you know you are buying a ball of good quality!
