Why Wear a Thermal Set During Winter Sports?

When going on a winter sports trip, we recommend wearing thermal clothing under your standard ski gear. This clothing ensures that you stay warm and dry. You can choose to wear just a thermal shirt or thermal pants, but by wearing a thermal set, you’re protected all around and can enjoy the slopes without worry. A thermal set consists of a thermal shirt and thermal pants, which you wear as a base layer under your ski clothing. Thermal clothing helps wick away moisture and maintain your body temperature, keeping you dry by transferring sweat to the second clothing layer.

Are You Familiar with the Three-Layer System?

When wearing your thermal clothing, it's essential to consider the three-layer system. The first layer is the base layer, which consists of thermal clothing that you wear directly on your skin. The layer of air between your skin and the thermal clothing helps keep your body temperature stable. Additionally, thermal clothing quickly wicks away sweat. If the thermal clothing fits slightly looser, the air layer is larger, primarily providing warmth. If the thermal clothing is tighter, the air layer is smaller, and the main function of the clothing is to wick away moisture. Therefore, for winter sports, we recommend choosing a slightly thicker thermal set.

The Best Thermal Sets for Winter Sports

The best thermal sets are made from synthetic polyester or merino wool. Merino wool helps you stay warm, does not itch, provides insulation, and stays fresh-smelling. Synthetic polyester effectively wicks moisture and dries quickly. Additionally, polyester feels soft, is lightweight, and retains its shape. While merino wool can eventually become wet, it still keeps your body warm. Within the Plutosport range, you’ll find thermal sets from various brands like Dare 2b, Craft, and Tenson. Tenson employs a special technique in their thermal sets called Power Comfort technology, which allows for rapid moisture wicking and a soft feel.

Tip

Follow the washing instructions found on the label inside the thermal set. This will guide you on how to wash the clothing to maintain its quality.
