Why Not Wear a Standard Winter Jacket During Skiing?

A good ski jacket is not just a regular winter jacket. A ski jacket is designed for active movement. Special features include breathable materials, which help prevent overheating. The jacket is longer so it won't ride up when you move, and the sleeves are wider at the elbows for extra freedom of movement. A ski jacket ventilates better than a winter jacket because it is specifically made for active use. Finally, the ski jacket is able to transport moisture from the inner layers to the outside air. On the slopes, the ski jacket should not be too warm, but when you're in the lift, it needs to retain heat well so you don't get cold.

What Should a Good Ski Jacket Meet

A ski jacket is made for active sports. The inside of the ski jacket should ensure that sweat is transferred to the outside as quickly as possible. The outside should prevent water from entering. The ski jacket must be windproof and water-repellent; the waterproofness of ski jackets is measured in water columns. To ensure you don't get too warm during a run, many ski jackets are equipped with ventilation zippers under the arms. These can be easily opened during a descent and closed again in the lift to retain heat. Don't choose an overly thick ski jacket. If you wear the right outfit, you'll naturally warm up during your runs.

Which Ski Jacket Should I Buy

Many ski jackets have a convenient pocket on the sleeve for your ski pass. You can easily swipe this sleeve past the scanners at the gates, so you don't have to keep taking the pass out of your pocket. Most ski jackets also come with a removable hood. A hood can be very useful in icy winds or snow showers. During a snow shower, the ski jacket helps snow roll off the jacket. The sleeves often feature thumb holes to prevent them from riding up while you're active. Inside the ski jacket, there is a snow skirt that keeps snow out if you fall. Ski jackets are available for every budget! Both beginner and seasoned skiers look for how warm the jacket is, how quickly it wicks away moisture, and whether it has a snow skirt. An experienced skier may be more inclined to choose a jacket with more technical features.

Waterproofness of Ski Jackets

When going skiing, you naturally want to wear a ski jacket that is warm and waterproof. The waterproofness of ski jackets is measured in water columns; you can read the meaning of the different values in the overview below.

From 0 mm: A ski jacket is water-repellent but not waterproof.
From 1,000 mm: A ski jacket keeps water out but is not pressure-resistant. For example, if you sit on a wet chair, the jacket will eventually leak.
From 2,000 mm: The ski jacket remains waterproof even during longer snow showers but may still leak under pressure.
From 5,000 mm: The ski jacket is resistant to long and intense weather; even under high pressure, the clothing remains waterproof. However, with prolonged high pressure, the product may eventually leak.
From 15,000 mm: The ski jacket is resistant to heavy snow showers, and even underwater, it keeps you dry.

Make sure the ski jacket you bring is breathable and provides good ventilation. This helps ensure that you don't overheat quickly, and when you do, moisture is transferred to the outside air. In short, the waterproof layer should allow moisture to escape from the inside but not let it in from the outside.

Tip

Complete your winter sports outfit by pairing your ski jacket with matching ski pants!
