Buying a sup board

Paddle boards come in different shapes and sizes, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. First, decide how you are going to use the board: for long trips, or an inflatable board that is easy to transport. A wide board has a lot of buoyancy and stability, a narrow board is more maneuverable.

What shapes of paddle boards are there?

Oval sup boards, also known as all-round boards, are used on both calm water and waves. Boards with a sharp point and flat back are called touring sup boards and are especially suitable for calm water: the shape ensures a smooth glide and good balance. Do you already have experience and do you want more of a challenge? A race sup board is narrow with a sharp nose, which makes it easy to gain speed and steer.

Is an inflatable paddle board right for me?

Many inflatable paddle boards have one, two or three fins: the larger and the more fins, the more stability and control, especially on rougher waters.

What size paddle board do I need?

Are you just starting out with supping? Then choose a board with more volume: wider, longer and thicker, for extra stability. Also keep your body weight in mind when choosing the right board.

Which accessories do you use while supping?

Pump up the board first, and provide a paddle to gain momentum and steer. An ankle leash prevents the board from drifting tens of meters if you fall off. For the winter, a storage bag is handy to store the board compactly.
