The benefits of screw studs

Many people think it's forbidden to play in boots with steel screw studs, but that's not the case. As long as the studs are well maintained, you can play on any pitch with them. The studs just aren't allowed to have sharp edges. A big advantage of these boots is that they offer plenty of grip thanks to the long, strong studs. This makes them very suitable for playing on wet, slippery pitches. The boots are marked with SG after the product name, which stands for Soft Ground. Thanks to the great grip they offer, they're also very suitable for goalkeepers.

The studs can be swapped for shorter ones, making the boot suitable for playing on drier pitches. Because the studs are replaceable, boots screw stud last longer. If the old studs are worn out, you can easily screw in new ones.

The drawbacks of screw studs

Besides the advantages mentioned above, boots screw stud also have drawbacks. Because the boot only has 6 to 8, fairly long, studs, they're less stable on harder surfaces. These boots also require a lot of maintenance and are therefore not suitable for players who don't check their boots after a training session or match.

Maintenance

It's important to keep boots screw stud clean, not just the top but especially the sole. The screw studs need to be loosened regularly to grease the thread with acid-free vaseline. Afterwards, when you screw the studs back in, it's important not to tighten them too much. Tight is tight!
