Is walking healthy?

Because walking is a low-risk sport, it has many benefits! Walking is good for your health in many ways, it is good for your muscles, bones, heart, blood vessels, lungs, and brain!

It is no secret that your muscles and bones become stronger with movement, but did you know that the cartilage in your joints stays healthy by taking regular walks? And walking for half an hour daily is also very good for your fitness! That's why walking is also very beneficial for older people.

Taking a walk is also a great way to get fresh air, which is obviously good for your lungs. If you walk for half an hour a day, you are well on your way, as your body releases endorphins while walking, making you happier and giving you more energy.

What do you need for walking?

Outdoor clothing

Planning to go for a nice walk? Make sure to dress comfortably in good and comfortable walking clothing! Nothing is more annoying than your pants falling down or your jacket being too tight, you don't want to be bothered by that while walking. The weather outside also plays a big role in choosing the right walking clothing. If you plan to walk when it's cold outside, we recommend layering. The base layer is often in the form of thermal clothing, followed by a mid-layer like a fleece vest to retain your body heat and wick away perspiration. Also part of the mid-layer is your walking pants, it's important to wear pants that feel light and dry quickly. The outer layer is the outdoor jacket, a rain or softshell jacket. On a warm sunny day, you don't need to wear all the layers, a snug walking shirt and walking shorts are sufficient.

Outdoor shoes

A beautiful walk is not as enjoyable if your feet start hurting, that's why we highly recommend getting good walking shoes. It's important to have good grip to prevent slipping and enough cushioning to reduce impact on your joints. Depending on the terrain you walk on and the type of walker you are, Plutosport offers a variety of walking shoe options. For example, if you're walking in mountainous terrain, it's better to choose high walking shoes. If you're someone who walks a lot in the Netherlands, low walking shoes are sufficient. Many people forget to buy good walking socks. The last thing you want is to stop along the way because you have blisters on your feet!

Outdoor accessories

In addition to wearing the right walking clothing and shoes, certain accessories can also come in handy. How about a walking bag, so you have everything you need during your walk? In addition to the walking bag, there are more accessories available on Plutosport.:

  • Walking can make you thirsty, so it's smart to bring a well-filled water bottle with you while walking.
  • On a sunny day, it's advisable to protect your head well, you can do this with an outdoor cap.
  • It may also be that you're walking in temperatures below freezing, in that case, wear a special neck warmer to keep your neck warm!

Tips

There is no bad weather, only bad preparation! Check the weather forecast before starting your walk and make the right preparations.

Plan a nice route of about 2.5 to 3 km and walk it every day. This way, you get your daily relaxation and meet the recommended 30 minutes of exercise per day.
