When to wear sandals while hiking?

On a warm day there's a good chance you don't feel like putting on your warm hiking shoes. We fully understand that, and luckily hiking sandals exist too. With these sandals you can cover long distances on various terrains. Since sandals are essentially open shoes, they're nicely airy, keeping your feet from sweating and so avoiding unpleasant odours.

What to look for when buying hiking sandals?

If you go for a genuine hiking sandal, there are a few features to look out for. Let's start with the closure: there are sandals with one or more straps and with velcro fastenings. When choosing a hiking sandal, make sure it fits snugly around the foot and that the straps hold the sandal securely in place. While walking, you don't want to worry about whether your footwear is staying properly on your foot. Many sandals can be firmly attached to the foot by means of straps or velcro fastenings. The sandals shouldn't pinch anywhere. With weak ankles it's not advisable to walk much in hiking sandals, since they only give moderate support to the foot and no support to the ankles.

Another factor to watch is cushioning. Many hiking sandals are fitted with EVA cushioning material. This material reduces the impact created with each step. This puts less strain on the joints in the ankles and knees, reducing the risk of injury.

Before buying a sandal, also look at the underside. It's important that the sandal offers plenty of grip on various surfaces, so it should be fitted with a coarse tread. Outsoles with a coarse tread and lots of different grooves are well suited for use as a hiking sandal.

The best hiking sandals

In our range you'll find hiking sandals for women, men, boys and girls. Of course we also stock sandals in cheerful, summery colours. Within our range you'll find hiking sandals from, among others, Ecco, Keen, Teva and Regatta.

Tip

When climbing a mountain, choose closed shoes instead of hiking sandals. During such climbs it often happens that you knock or scrape your foot against sharp rocks. Sandals can't protect your feet against this.
