What should a good rain jacket offer?
Of course the purpose of a rain jacket is to keep you dry. But do you also consider that the jacket needs to have ventilating properties? This prevents sweating, letting you keep wearing the rain jacket comfortably while hiking too. What else should you look out for when buying a rain jacket? That's waterproofness, expressed in a water column. Below you can find at what water column you have sufficient protection.
- From 0 mm: the rain jacket is water-repellent, but not waterproof.
- From 1,000 mm: the rain jacket keeps out water, but isn't pressure-resistant. If you sit down on a wet chair, for example, the rain jacket will eventually leak.
- From 2,000 mm: the rain jacket stays waterproof even during longer rain showers, but will still leak under pressure.
- From 5,000 mm: the rain jacket withstands long and intense weather; even under high pressure the jacket stays waterproof. Under very prolonged high pressure the product may eventually leak.
- From 15,000 mm: the rain jacket withstands extremely heavy rain showers, and even underwater the jacket keeps you dry.
How important is the material of a rain jacket?
A rain jacket shouldn't let rain or wind through, but must still be made from breathable material. This prevents excessive sweating and helps the body stay at the right temperature. When choosing, also check whether the rain jacket has a hood, whether the sleeves can be closed off properly, and whether the seams and zips are well finished so they don't let water through. Most rain jackets are fitted with reflective parts, so you're clearly visible even in dull, dark weather. How do I clean my rain jacket?
Clean the outside of a rain jacket with a sponge and warm water. Preferably don't put the rain jacket in the washing machine. The water-repellent properties of the jacket can otherwise diminish significantly. So always check the wash label carefully beforehand. If the jacket can be washed in the machine, don't use fabric softener. Hang the rain jacket up to dry, avoiding sun and heating while doing so.
Tip
Most rain jackets can be packed away small in a supplied pouch. So always head out prepared and bring your rain jacket!
