Buy Skates Now

As soon as it freezes, ice fever grips the Netherlands, and everyone, young and old, is ready to strap on skates to test out the natural ice. Skating allows you to reach places you would normally never see, enjoying nature while staying active. Nowadays, there are also many artificial ice rinks open year-round. Here, we’ll tell you more about everything you need for a skating trip.

What Type of Skates Should I Buy?

The most important thing you need for a trip on the ice is, of course, the skates. Skates come in many types with different features. For children, there are special gliding skates that strap onto their shoes to help them learn. For adults, there are “noren” skates, which have long blades designed for long-distance skating. Figure and hockey skates, with shorter blades, are more suitable for making short loops, turns, and tricks—but they aren’t ideal for long trips.

Skating Clothing

Choosing the right clothing for skating can be tricky. To help with this, we recommend the three-layer system. You can find detailed information on this system in our skating clothing section.

Skating Accessories

There are various accessories to help keep you warm on the ice. Wear a hat and gloves to prevent heat loss through the head and hands. A pair of skating glasses will protect your eyes from harsh UV rays and help prevent dryness and tearing. You’ll also find special skate guards to cover the blades if you need to “klunen” (walking on skates over roads or surfaces that aren’t ice). These guards help protect the blades from damage.

Tip

After skating, dry off your skates with an old cloth. This will prevent the blades from rusting.
