Skating Gloves and Hats

To protect yourself against the cold, it’s wise to wear gloves and a hat. The most body heat is lost from extremities like hands, feet, and the head, so covering these areas helps reduce heat loss. Additionally, gloves offer protection in case of a fall or if someone accidentally skates over your hand, which can cause scrapes or cuts. Strong, durable gloves can help prevent these injuries.

Skating Helmets

More and more skaters are wearing helmets, which is a great development. Skating carries a higher risk of head injury than any other sport! A helmet protects your head in case of a fall, helping prevent head injuries. Skating helmets are also increasingly required in ice rinks. They are oval-shaped and lightweight, ideal for high-speed skating.

Sports Glasses for Skating

When skating in the sun, the reflection off the ice can make the sunlight extra intense for the eyes. That’s why we recommend wearing sports sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV rays. Regular sunglasses are often heavy and made of glass, which can be dangerous for the eyes in case of a fall. It’s also helpful to wear glasses in cold winds, as they prevent your eyes from tearing up or drying out.

Extra Protection

If you’re skating in natural settings, it’s important to have some self-rescue tools in case something goes wrong. If you break through the ice or skate into an open patch, ice picks can help you pull yourself out of the water. It’s also a good idea to bring skate guards, which protect the blades if you need to step off the ice.

Tip

If regular gloves aren’t warm enough, consider wearing mittens. They have thicker insulation, and by keeping your fingers together, they allow the fingers to warm each other up. Mittens provide more warmth than gloves with separate finger compartments.
