Hockey shoes

Hockey shoes from Asics, Brabo and Reece offer the grip, cushioning and agility you need on the pitch or indoors. For outdoor hockey you choose a shoe with small studs for grip on artificial turf, for indoor hockey a flat sole with a herringbone pattern that doesn't slip on the floor. Always check the size chart, as it differs per brand.

Indoor hockey shoes vs outdoor hockey shoes

The most commonly played variant of hockey is outdoor hockey, played outside on an artificial turf pitch. Different hockey shoes are suitable for this form than for the other form, indoor hockey. Outdoor hockey shoes need to provide good grip, absorb impacts and offer agility. Indoor hockey shoes can be recognised by the fact that you need enough freedom of movement at the ankle and your shoe shouldn't slip at the heel.

Which hockey shoes suit me?

To perform well while playing hockey, it's important to wear good shoes. These need to provide good grip on the pitch, but at the same time the shoes also need to provide good agility. To relieve the joints as much as possible and absorb the impacts, the shoes need to be fitted with cushioning and support the feet. Finally, the shoes need to be able to take a beating. The shoes don't just deal with a lot of running and braking, a hit from a stick or ball also occurs regularly in hockey.

The sole of the shoe is made to provide sufficient grip. Playing on the pitch requires a different sole than playing indoors. Indoors, a flat sole with a herringbone pattern is very suitable. Standard indoor hockey shoes are often used for this. For outdoor hockey, a sole with many small studs is needed. The studs shouldn't be as long as on a football boot, because then the studs would stay too deep in the pitch, which hampers agility and can cause unpleasant injuries. Brands like Asics, Brabo and Reece have an extensive range that takes these important points into account.

How long do hockey shoes last?

How long your shoes last depends on how often you play. On average you need to replace them after a maximum of two seasons if you play hockey twice a week. Always make sure you clean the shoes well after use. Always take out your insole after every training session or match and let it air out well, preferably in the fresh outdoor air. Have the shoes gotten wet? Then let them dry in the outdoor air too, and definitely not in front of the heater!

Tip

The shoes shouldn't pinch, but shouldn't be too big either. So check the size chart carefully to see which shoe size matches which foot length. Note that the size chart can differ per brand.
