Why choose cycling shoes?

If you are planning to get on the road bike, you will of course need the right shoes. Regular sports shoes won't get you far, as you need special cycling shoes that allow you to attach the shoe to the pedals with a click system. Within cycling shoes, you have the choice between road cycling shoes and mountain biking shoes. Depending on your cycling activity, you choose the right shoe as there are indeed differences between MTB shoes or road cycling shoes.

The best road cycling shoes

The best road cycling shoes should have the right features such as fit, closure type, and sole. Both the shoe itself and the sole of a road cycling shoe are very sturdy, minimizing play and minimizing energy loss. So: the stiffer the sole, the faster you go! There are road cycling shoes with a carbon sole, this material is very sturdy but does not weigh as much as a rubber sole. The low weight also works in your favor, because having less weight on your foot requires less energy! There are also different types of shoe closures, with Velcro, wire, and buckle closures being the most common. While a beginner may opt for a Velcro closure, someone with more experience may prefer a wire or buckle closure. A Velcro closure is often cheaper and easy to use, while the other two closures require a bit more attention but ensure a snug fit to your foot.

What size road cycling shoes do I need?

We recommend measuring your bare foot and consulting the size chart on the product page based on the number of centimeters. Some brands have a narrower fit while others have a wider fit, which is clearly indicated in the product description. The ideal road cycling shoe should not be too tight or too loose. A shoe that is too tight can cause constriction, while a shoe that is too loose can lead to irritation and reduce the power you can exert on the pedals.

How do road cycling shoes work?

Unlike mountain biking shoes, road cycling shoes are not suitable for the SPD clipless system. Road cycling shoes have a separate system, namely the SPD-SL clipless system! The road cycling shoes must be equipped with an SPD-SL cleat (with a three-point connection) and in combination with the SPD-SL clipless pedals, your power will be optimally utilized as you can exert much more force.
