Road bike pedals vs. mountain bike pedals

There are two types of clipless pedals, namely road bike pedals and mountain bike pedals. But what is the difference? During mountain biking, it may happen that you have to walk a bit, which is why you can walk much easier in mountain bike shoes (which are suitable for mountain bike pedals)! Road cyclists, on the other hand, have to walk less frequently and their shoes (suitable for road bike pedals) are a bit simpler. In mountain bike shoes, the cleat is neatly hidden, so you won't experience any discomfort while walking. The cleats of a road bike shoe are less well hidden, causing the front of the foot to be slightly higher than the back of the foot. Additionally, there is a difference between the two types of pedals. Mountain bike pedals are suitable for clipping in on both sides, while road bike pedals only allow clipping in on one side with your shoe. Road bike pedals are designed so that the correct side is always on top, so you shouldn't have any issues with them. You might be wondering what the advantage of road bike pedals is? They have a larger surface area, providing better foot support!

Cleats

Depending on the pedals and shoes you buy, you can also choose the right cleats. There are separate road bike cleats (three-point connection) and mountain bike cleats (two-point connection). There is also a difference in the amount of float you have, Shimano has made the following distribution:

  • Red cleats have no float and are intended for advanced cyclists. Because there is no float in the connection, the upward force is maximized, but it can be more difficult to release from the pedals.
  • Blue cleats are a combination of red and yellow cleats. With blue cleats, the front of the shoe is securely attached, but the back of the foot still has some float.
  • Yellow cleats have the most float, but this also means the most energy loss. However, the knees are minimally stressed with yellow cleats, which is why they are perhaps the favorite among most cyclists.

Tip

Is this your first ride with clipless pedals? Practice first while standing next to a wall or a lamppost. To unclip from the pedals, turn your heel to the outside, try this a few times before you start the real ride.
