How do I choose the right rain suit?

A rain suit consists of a rain jacket and rain pants. The most important thing about a rain suit is that it is made of waterproof material, but that is not the only important characteristic. It is also nice if the rain suit is breathable, allowing perspiration to be transported to the outside. If the suit does not have this feature, sweat cannot escape from the suit and the body will still get wet.

The waterproofness of a rain suit is always expressed in water column, in the overview below you can read what these values exactly mean.

From 0 mm: The rainwear is water-repellent, but not waterproof.
From 1,000 mm: The rainwear repels water, but is not resistant to pressure. For example, if you sit on a wet chair, the rainwear will eventually start leaking.
From 2,000 mm: The rainwear remains waterproof even during longer rain showers, but will still leak under pressure.
From 5,000 mm: The rainwear is resistant to long and intense weather, even under high pressure the clothing remains waterproof. With very prolonged high pressure, the product may eventually start leaking.
From 15,000 mm: The rainwear is resistant to heavy rain showers and even underwater the clothing keeps you dry.

Characteristics

So, a rain suit must be windproof, waterproof, and breathable. In addition, a rain suit should have a hood to protect the head from the rain. Also, make sure not to buy the rain suit too small. The suit is worn over normal clothing, so it's nice if the rain suit is a bit wider. The pants are also quite wide, so you don't have to take off your shoes when putting on or taking off the pants. Most rain suits have pant legs and sleeves that can be made narrower at the bottom using, for example, Velcro, preventing rain from coming in.

Tip

Most rain suits have reflective details, so you can stand out even more during a heavy rain shower. Additionally, you can wear separate reflective accessories to be even more visible on a dark day.
