Cycling Glasses
What is a cycling glasses?
Cycling glasses provide protection for your eyes against bright light and UV radiation. In addition, the cycling glasses also offer protection against wind, dirt, and insects. For example, if wind gets into your eyes, you may experience watery eyes and impaired vision.
What should a good cycling glasses meet?
It is important that cycling glasses provide UV protection. The glasses should fit comfortably and stay in place during a bike ride. Cycling glasses should be lightweight. Additionally, you can check if the glasses have adjustable temples and/or an adjustable nose bridge. These features ensure that the glasses can be properly adjusted to fit your head. A full frame provides more protection than a semi-open frame. It is important not to look against the edges of the frame so that you can see sharpness in the entire field of vision. Also, make sure that the lenses are easy to replace if the cycling glasses come with interchangeable lenses.
Quality standards
The European Union has established a number of quality standards for filter quality of sunglasses. If sunglasses or cycling glasses have a CE mark, then these glasses have a 100% UV filter. The lenses are divided into 5 categories to indicate how much visible light is absorbed. Category 0: weak light or heavily overcast sky (0 to 20%), clear or lightly tinted lenses. Category 1: tempered sunlight or overcast sky (20 to 37%), lightly tinted lenses. Category 2: moderate sunlight (37 to 82%), tinted lenses. Category 3: Strong sunlight, sea and mountains (82 to 92%), dark tinted lenses. Category 4: Extremely strong sunlight, high mountains, glaciers, and open sea (92 to 97%), very dark tinted lenses.
What different types of lens are there for cycling glasses?
Dark lenses: wear them in bright sunlight
- Colored lenses: wear them when there is less light, to enhance contrast (for example, in cloudy or foggy weather)
- Transparent lenses: wear them for protection against wind, dirt, and bugs
- Photochromatic lenses: these lenses adapt to the light intensity
Polarized lenses are lenses that eliminate the glare of sunlight. This is an ideal cycling glasses when you are cycling along water or on asphalt, for example.
