What cycling clothing do I need?

You can dress for bad weather, so there's no reason not to go out. There is cycling clothing for every type of weather. As outerwear, you can follow the 3-layer system as a guideline. For base layers, make sure you wear comfortable clothing to prevent saddle pain and chafing.

Outerwear

You can build up outerwear in 3 layers. The first, bottom layer consists of a base layer in the form of a thermal shirt. This layer absorbs sweat and transfers it to the second layer. The second layer consists of a cycling shirt. This shirt can be a bit looser, creating an insulating air layer between this and the bottom layer. The last layer is worn only when it rains, is windy, or cold. This outer layer consists of a cycling jacket. This jacket keeps the wind out and is simultaneously ventilating, allowing it to transfer sweat to the outside air.

It's not necessary to wear all these layers every time you go out. It depends on the weather which layers you choose to wear. If it's very hot, you can choose to skip the base layer, and the outer layer, the cycling jacket, is only worn in bad or colder weather.

For women, a good sports bra is important. A sports bra provides support to the breasts and prevents them from sagging. Since the breasts do not contain muscles to absorb the pressure that occurs during cycling, the sports bra takes on this task.

Base Layers

The base layer consists of cycling shorts. There are long, three-quarter, and short cycling shorts. Most cycling shorts are tight pants with a chamois. The chamois is a cushion that sits under the buttocks and between the saddle, which should prevent saddle pain. If you don't like tight pants, there are also looser cycling shorts available. If you wear a short tight pants or special cycling underwear underneath, you get the same benefits as with the tight pants with chamois. The cycling shorts are made of quick-drying material that quickly wicks away sweat.

Cycling Socks

You may not immediately think of socks when it comes to a cycling outfit, but special cycling socks enhance cycling comfort. Cycling socks are specially designed to quickly wick away sweat, keeping your feet dry. In addition, cycling socks are extra elastic and protective around the Achilles tendons.

Cycling Rain Gear

In a country like the Netherlands, it's always handy to have rain gear in your closet. When you go cycling, you can suddenly end up in a shower. It's important that rain gear is made of waterproof material. In addition, rain gear should ventilate and wick away sweat, so your body doesn't get wet from sweat.
