Which goalkeeper gloves for which surface?

Just like with football boots, it's also very important for goalkeeper gloves which surface they're used on! Do you use goalkeeper gloves meant for natural grass on artificial turf? Then the goalkeeper gloves will probably wear out a lot faster. Goalkeeper gloves for natural grass have a softer foam layer than goalkeeper gloves for artificial turf. Thanks to this soft foam layer they offer a lot of grip, but they will also wear out faster if you don't use them on the right surface. Do you mainly keep on artificial turf or indoors? Then it's best to choose so-called hardground goalkeeper gloves! These goalkeeper gloves have a firmer, more wear-resistant foam layer, so you'll enjoy them for longer. This doesn't necessarily mean that goalkeeper gloves for natural grass aren't suitable for use on artificial turf or indoors and vice versa, but the goalkeeper gloves will last longest if you use them on the surface they're intended for!

Goalkeeper gloves with or without fingersave

Fingersave has to do with protecting your fingers. Goalkeeper gloves with fingersave have a kind of small splint behind the fingers, so your fingers can't bend backwards. These fingersave inserts also protect your fingers against impacts or when someone stands on your hands with their studs. However, the splint does reduce your freedom of movement, which some goalkeepers see as a disadvantage.

Which size goalkeeper gloves for men?

Make sure the gloves you buy are the right size. If you put the gloves on and there's already (slight) pressure on the seams, this size is too small for you. When a ball hits the gloves, the pressure becomes too great and the seams may tear. It's therefore better to choose a slightly too big glove than a slightly too small one. Glove sizes can vary per brand. Check the corresponding size chart to see which size you need.

How expensive are goalkeeper gloves?

The price of goalkeeper gloves varies. This has to do with the properties the gloves have. The thickness of the foam and whether or not they have fingersave affect the price. You get more grip with thicker foam. The foam will eventually wear down, but gloves with thicker foam last longer. If you notice some wear spots, the grip won't decrease immediately. Only once the canvas of the glove shows through the foam can you speak of reduced grip. You can still train with the gloves in that case, but use a new pair for optimal grip during matches.

How do I maintain my goalkeeper gloves?

It's important to maintain your goalkeeper gloves properly, as this extends their lifespan. Clean the gloves after training or a match with lukewarm running tap water. Don't do this with a hard brush. If your gloves are wet, gently squeeze them out. Don't wring the gloves out.

Tip

Slightly damp gloves offer improved grip and last longer. That's why you should make sure your goalkeeper gloves are always a bit damp. Even if you don't use them for a while, it's a good idea to dampen the gloves occasionally, so they don't dry out or tear. You could, for example, wrap them in a damp towel for a while. Try out different goalkeeper gloves and decide which one is the best choice for you.
