Shoes and Socks

Good shoes are the foundation of your running outfit; they support your feet and ensure you strike the asphalt correctly. Within the category of running shoes, there is a distinction between neutral runners and overpronators. Neutral runners land on the middle or outer part of the heel and push off from the middle of the forefoot. Overpronators land on the outside of the heel, roll inward across the foot, and push off from the inside of the forefoot.

In addition to these categories, there are also trail running shoes designed for running in nature and on unpaved paths.

Socks are also crucial for running! Good running socks are seamless and can wick away moisture, keeping your feet fresh. Additionally, running socks provide support to the foot, which reduces the risk of blisters and other issues.

Three-Layer System

With a good outfit, you achieve two goals at once: you improve your performance and your running enjoyment. Many runners swear by the three-layer system, which involves wearing multiple layers of clothing. The first layer is a thermal shirt worn directly on your body. This shirt helps regulate body temperature, keeping you neither too cold nor too warm. The second layer is an insulating layer that wicks moisture from the first layer and allows fresh air to enter. This layer is usually a running shirt with long or short sleeves. The third layer is designed to protect you from rain and wind, with a water- and windproof running jacket being ideal. Ensure that this third layer is also breathable, so sweat can be fully expelled, keeping your body dry and fresh.

In summer, you can opt for two layers or even just one, depending on the outside temperature and your preference.

For running pants, you can choose between long tights or short shorts, depending on what you find most comfortable.

Injury Support

Running is very healthy, but like any sport, there is a risk of injury. It is especially important to listen to your body while running, though this does not prevent all injuries. Many injuries develop gradually and stem from previous issues. To continue exercising during an injury or to speed up recovery, you may choose to wear a brace or use tape. Look for more injury support options here.

Tip

Running in the dark? Make sure to carry some reflective accessories so you are visible to other road users!
