Is wearing a hockey mouthguard mandatory?

Unfortunately accidents involving a hockey ball or hockey stick still happen on the pitch, so it's very important to properly protect your teeth. A mouthguard ensures the teeth are properly shielded, minimising the risk of (irreparable) damage. Wearing a hockey mouthguard indoors and on the pitch has been mandatory since the 2015/2016 season.

What makes a good hockey mouthguard?

The most important thing is that the hockey mouthguard fits your teeth well and stays in place during play. Hockey mouthguards come in various types: the standard mouthguard is the most affordable option, Boil & Bite mouthguards you boil before use so they mould to your teeth and mouth, and a custom-made mouthguard is the most comfortable but also the most expensive. Hockey mouthguards are also available in junior and senior sizes. Generally, men up to age 12 wear a junior mouthguard and then move on to a senior mouthguard. Wearing braces? Some hockey mouthguards are made so they can also be worn with braces.

How do I clean my hockey mouthguard?

There are a lot of bacteria in your mouth, and by wearing the hockey mouthguard, those bacteria may also end up in the mouthguard. So always clean your hockey mouthguard thoroughly after use, with cold water, a bit of soap and a toothbrush. Then rinse the mouthguard well and store it in its storage case.
