The Base Layer
A short-sleeved thermal shirt is worn over your (sports) bra and its main goal is to keep your body dry and at the right temperature. Sweat is produced through intense movement, but a thermal shirt quickly wicks this moisture away to the next layer, keeping your body fresh while still warm!
Thermal shirts are available in long-sleeve or short-sleeve versions. A short-sleeved thermal shirt is especially suitable for days when it’s only a few degrees below freezing. It still provides enough warmth for your upper body, while offering some extra ventilation for your arms. This way, you won’t get too hot or too cold!
Dry Body
A thermal shirt keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. A short-sleeved thermal shirt can therefore be worn all year round. The thickness of the material varies from one thermal shirt to another. A thicker thermal shirt that fits loosely is primarily designed to keep your body warm. On the other hand, a thinner, tighter thermal shirt focuses on wicking away perspiration. The activity you're doing and the weather conditions will determine which thermal shirt you choose. During winter sports, you're active, so your body produces heat. Therefore, avoid choosing too thick a thermal shirt.
Material
Merino wool is a common material for thermal shirts. The advantages of merino wool are that it doesn’t itch and stays fresh for longer. It also shares similar properties with polyester; it absorbs very little moisture, wicks sweat away quickly, and is lightweight. Polyester additionally retains its shape well. Some thermal shirts contain stretch for an even more comfortable fit.
Some brands apply advanced technologies in their thermal shirts. Craft’s Coolmax Extreme Fresh FX technology helps prevent unpleasant odors. Tenson’s Power Comfort technology wicks moisture away and dries quickly. Odlo’s seamless technology ensures maximum freedom of movement.
Tips
It’s important to wash your short-sleeved thermal shirt according to the washing instructions. If you don’t, the shirt’s essential properties may be lost. The washing instructions can be found on the care label inside the thermal shirt.
