Why a yoga mat?

If you perform your yoga exercises on the floor, the chance of slipping is high. Yoga mats provide grip, support, and if you fall, you fall softly. Additionally, it is also much more hygienic to perform the exercises on your own mat instead of on the ground.

A suitable yoga mat for everyone

A yoga mat should provide enough grip, stability, and comfort. Most yogis choose a yoga mat between 0.4cm and 0.6cm, which are not too thick and therefore provide sufficient stability. A thinner yoga mat offers less comfort, and with a mat that is too thick, stability and grip will decrease.

Yoga mats often have a length between 160cm and 190cm, with a width of around 60cm. To make sure you choose the right size, it is best to ask someone else to measure you.

Do you sweat a lot during yoga? Then choose a yoga mat that can wick away perspiration or place a towel over your mat. This way, the sweat can be removed, and your body stays dry.

Benefits of a yoga mat

Due to the rough material yoga mats are made of, a yoga mat provides a lot of grip. Because you don't slip, you are able to perform all asanas safely. The yoga mat allows you to evenly distribute pressure, positively stimulating blood circulation.

Tips

New yoga mats may contain a layer of oil, which sometimes remains after the production process. You can remove this layer of oil with mild soap, making the yoga mat immediately feel sticky.

Yoga mats are best washed by hand. Prefer to use the washing machine? Then set the machine to a maximum of 30°C and use as little detergent as possible. After washing, let the mat dry hanging, not in the sun or on the heater!
