How big should an air mattress be?

There are both single air mattresses and double air mattresses. Of course, it is important what you find comfortable yourself, but even more important is to know what size air mattress fits in the tent. Do you have enough space in the tent? Then you can easily opt for a nice thick double air mattress! But if you have a small pop-up tent, it's better to choose a thinner single mat. If you want to put your bag/suitcase in the sleeping area, you should also take this into account when choosing an air mattress. It goes without saying that with a smaller and thinner air mattress, there will be more space left in the tent than with a large and thick air mattress.

Thick air mattress vs. thin mat

A thick double air mattress has many great advantages, it is sturdy and very comfortable, it is warmer than a thin air mattress and you can get up more easily from a thick air mattress than from a thin mat.

On the other hand, a thin mat has mainly practical advantages, you can easily inflate it with air, you can easily deflate it and roll it up small, making it very easy to take with you!

So the type of air mattress you choose depends a lot on your preferences and possibilities! Are you going backpacking? Then you probably benefit more from the practical advantages of a mat! But if you are staying at the same campsite for three weeks, it can be very nice to have a good and large air mattress.
